Youth leads the way at Conference Championship…..

Track and field is not always considered a team sport by the non-track and field community. The best way to prove your doubters or like the kids say now “haters” is to do well in the relay races and overall scoring. The mark of a great team is how well you do in those parts of the championship. After the conference championship, to quote my favorite motivational speaks my boy ET - “Greatness is with you (we)” – Statesmen. Our team show up and showed out with all our relay teams qualifying for the regional championship and both teams finishing 3^rd and 4^th in the standings.

Relays

The girl’s 4x800m team dropped the hammer in the first final of the championship – destroying the field by over 30 seconds. They lapped everyone except the 2^nd place team and one more lap and they would have been toast too because we were finishing they had just started their final lap. The team made of pure youth (Freshman Ava Bir, Ashley Holt, Heather Holt and THE CAPTAIN Senior Anna Thillairajah – rocked and roll the competition – setting a new indoors and over all school record, new conference championship meet record and auto qualified for the state championship with the #2 state ranking performance.

The boy’s team had big shoes to fill after last year’s team broke the school record and set the meet record. Junior Alexander Haight was the only returning member and he was chosen to lead off the relay and he did not disappoint putting the team in great position to battle the whole way. It was a three way battle with Jefferson and Edison and the team of Haight, junior Ryan Corkill, sophomore Patrick Lynch and sophomore Aiden O’Leary fight to the end and placed 3^rd to qualify for the regional championship.

The 4x200m Relays team has had their share mishaps and misfortune over the years but they were not to be denied this year. The girl’s team running from the slow section – knew they had work to do. The team of Freshmen Sofia Devin, Senior Martha Chaillo Lizarraga, junior Elise Dirkse and senior Katrina Uher had to battle the clock and they were up to the challenge. On the slippery track on Thomas Jefferson Middle school – they only way to win is in the front and the team showed their supremacy by grab the lead early and never looking back, winning their heat and placing 3^rd and book their ticket to regional champs.

The boy’s 4x200m was in the 2^nd and fast section and they had a different kind of battle. Their task was a little simpler at least as it looked on paper. They came in ranked 2^nd in the meet but this was a different track and at the start they got behind and were sitting in 4^th place with only three teams going to the regional championship. Usually you can never pass on this track but anchor leg, Senior Francisco Flores was determined not make this his final meet. Flores got the stick and motored around the turn, going wide and battling all the way into the final turn, he took a slight lead into the final straight away over the Jefferson runner, who became cornered and in a final attempt to get back the lead tripped and seal his fate – Statesmen collected the 3^rd and final stop. The team of Senior Victor Agbara, Senior Alexander Stockero, Junior Robert Leap and Flores becoming only the 3^rd team in 15 seasons to make it to the regional championship.

Last time the Girl’s 4x400m relay team faced the defending conference champions Mt. Vernon the team secured a regional qualifier and just missed the state auto qualifier. So, a battle was expected in the final heat of the championship. The race started as expect with the tight one two battle with the defending champions taking a slight lead on the hand off. The Lady Statesmen would be fighting an uphill battle for the rest of the race while fighting off Thomas Edison on their heel. The team of Freshman Ava Bir, Freshman Ashley Holt, Sophomore Thando Muchemenyi and sophomore Hannah Smith would hold on for a 2^nd place finish after huge yell and gritting final effort. Unfortunately, the first battle with the conference champion would prove worthy and valuable fight as the Statesmen were disqualified for obstruction violation and needed that performs to still qualify them to the regional based on time.

The boy’s 4x400m team is always a fun way to close out the championship but the boy’s team has other ideas in mind, they wanted to finish it out with grand fashion. They had a lot of work to do and with nothing to lose they laid it on the line and let the chips fall where it may. The team of sophomore Aiden O’Leary, Junior John Gieseler, Junior Robert Leap and Junior Ryan Corkill found themselves with quite a battle on the way to fun. On the first hand off – they were in second and Gieseler with the big long strides eat up the track to put them into second place, the would hold the position and on the final stretch away, Corkill laid it on the line and held by a photo finish to second the silver medal for the team to close a super super championship.

Individuals

Junior John “Jack” Gieseler was entrenched in a great fight last year for the conference championship which saw him lose out on the title, it would be no such battle at last year regional championship as he was crowned champion. This year, Gieseler was penciled in to be the odds on favorite to easy take the title after setting a new school record and came in ranked #2 in the State. Championship competitions should never be taken for granted and Jack would find himself jumping to make sure he does not become one for the stats and not the hardware. After make his opening height on his second attempt – he was left competing again only one athlete. With Gieseler sitting 2^nd on misses, his opponent tried to pull a fast one by raising the bar four inches to take advantage of his placing and forcing the pressure on Jack to make the next height. Wisely, Gieseler would refuse the request which is his right – he would clear the next height on first attempt and his opponent would make the height on his second attempt. The bar was raised to the opponent previous requested height and both athletes would miss, handling Gieseler his first high jump conference title.

Freshman Heather Holt got her first taste of indoor track and she picked up where she left off at the state cross-country championship winning her first event in a new school record. She would continue to have a wonderful indoor season which would include five more school records (1600m, Mile, 3200m, 4x8R, DMR). The conference championship figured to be her easiest meet of the season after coming to the 1600m ranked over 30 seconds to the closest opponent. The hardest part of her race was starting the race. Heather would navigate that danger and would literately run away with her first individual and second conference title of the meet while setting a new meet and conference record.

Freshman Ava Bir talent was only hidden one time this season, like most freshmen you never knew what you would get, so the first meet, her inexperienced showed up. It would never happen again as she would go on to drop the hammer the next meet with a 2^nd place finish, regional qualifier and top four all time performance in the 1000m. Last week at Virginia Tech Invitational – Bir make her presence felt on the State stage with an eye popping run in the 500m to book her ticket to the 5A state championship. The conference championship figure to be an easy affair and starting the race – Bir dominated from the start and the result would have shown but the official clearly missed the 2^nd place finisher cutting in early. Nevertheless, Ava was never challenged as she claimed her first individual title. Sophomores Hannah Smith and Thando Muchemenyi would do battle in the 2^nd last heat and pull themselves into 4^th and 6^th and qualified for the regional championship in the 500m dash.

Freshman Ashley Holt started the season on very high notes as the lead off leg on the winning 4x800m relay team that set a new school record. The season took some bumpy turns for the next few meets and it got back on track with a freezing run in Manassas and it came back to some sense of normalcy with great runs at the quad meet and Virginia Tech. The conference championship competing would be quite familiar with her as she would be battling her two teammates – Junior Sarah Smith and Senior Anna Thillairajah as they came into the meet ranked 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd. At the start of the race, Ashley would shoot out into the lead with the field tracking her in a bunch; she would continue to push the pace for the next four laps and to grab the title with a new meet record. Teammate Smith would pull away from the bunch with a final sprint to take 2^nd and Thillairajah would grit it out to secure the 7^th and final spot. The battle will continue at regional champs with Ava Bir joining the action.

It is hard following in the footsteps of the champions from your team in the previous season; it is even harder when that person is your big brother, state champion and school recorder holder. Junior Alexander Haight uses those stats to only serve as motivation and target practice. In the 1600m, Haight looked to follow in his brother path and took it to his competitors from the start. He pushed the pace from the start along with is teammate sophomore Patrick Lynch as they was in a tight back and field battle with Jefferson and Edison runners. Haight and one Jefferson would run neck to neck for the last two laps as they separate themselves from the pack and the race wouldn’t be decided until the last 20 meters. Haight would have to settle for 2^nd place, Lynch sprint away to capture 3^rd place to cap a new step forward to regional championship after missing out last season due to injuries.

Senior John Gieseler came in ranked 2^nd in the 55m hurdles and he was trying to retain the title won last year by Matt Colwell (C’2014) and looked in great position to collect the win but fell short in a photo finish to take the runner up position. Junior Justin McFaul wanted in to the 3200m run and was granted his wish and he did not disappoint running away from the bunch with two laps to go securing the 2^nd place finish. Sophomore Jenna Robbins had her battle off the track this season after coming off a great cross-country and a great first meet to place 2^nd in the 3200m run in a relative easy run, improving on her results from last year’s championship.

Senior Jordan Shumate just know how to show up at the championships, last year he stepped up big time to take 2^nd in the shot put and 3^rd in the High jump to help the boy’s team win the conference title. This year was no different as Shumate again qualified in the shot put and the high jump for the regional championship. Senior Sheina Bronfman was upset last year with her performances and made a promise to herself and her coaches that she will make them proud come next season. She worked hard and pushed herself during the summer and before the season. From the first meet, her hard work showed up and performances were on point. It all was threatened by a slight concussion two weeks before the conference championship. After passing all the required test, Bronfman was back in the circle for the quad meet, she returned to the same facility three days later and this time she had her best throw of her life and it propelled her into the regional championship – one step closer to making it to the state championship.

Senior Martha Chaillo Lizarraga is heading back to the regional championship after finishing 3^rd in the 55m hurdlers, sophomore Aiden O’Leary had a tough time on the slippery track and had to settle for 3^rd in the 500m dash, new to the high jump and 55m hurdles – sophomore Inga Schlier looked seasoned and qualified for both events for the regional championship, Freshman Jack Feenick continued his raised in the last three meets to book his ticket to the regional championship. Freshman Sofia Devin quietly had a great meet with a bronze medal performance in the Long jump and regional qualifying in the 300m dash, Senior Katrina Uher was upset when she didn’t get to compete last year in the long jump event at conference but made the most of her opportunity this year and will be going as she predicted to regional in the event, she will be joined in the boy long jump by Junior Robert Leap competing for the first time in winter track. Sophomore Alexandra Stenseth make a serious push to make the conference team in the last few meet and the hard work paid off as she will be competing at the regional championship, Senior Skyler Abriola and freshman Fiona Rickels could not separate themselves from each other plus another competitors – so they tied for the 7^th and final spot in the event – so all three will be going to regionals.

Overall the Girl’s team finished 3^rd with 99.5 points and the Boy’s team finished 4^th with 77 points.

Dec. 27th Meet Summary.

The team continues to collect great performances during the winter break lead by Freshman Heather Holt on the girl's side and Junior John Gieseler on the boy's side. Holt won the 1600m run (5:14.48) at the meet with an automatic state qualifier. Gieseler equal his own school record, better the state qualifying mark and placed 2nd in the High jump (6ft 2in).

Senior Jordan Shumate continues to have a quiet and great season, followed his regional qualifying performance in the shot put last meet with a medalling performance this meet (6th) - just missing the regional mark by a quarter of an inch (41' 8.5" to 41' 8.75").

In additional the team claimed 14 additional automatic conference qualifier - Inga Schlier (55mH), Gieseler (55mH), Sofia Devin (55m & 300m), Ava Bir (1600m), Anna Thillairajah & Thando Muchemenyi (500m), Aiden O'Leary (500m), Sarah Smith (1000m), Alexander Haight (1000m).

We currently have 4 athletes automatically qualifier in the Girl's 1600m and 500m - one over the limited allowed by each school. For any school to have over 3 athletes - they all need the meet the qualifying mark - which we already have 1 over.

Our next meet will be Jan. 10th - Montgomery Invitational.

Dec. 22nd - Meet Summary

Congratulations to Freshman Heather Holt (3200m - currently #1 in the State, Regional, Conference and last 15 seasons and probably an indoor school record - I need to verify it), Junior John Gieseler (High Jump) and sophomore Aiden O'Leary (1000m - #3 in school history) on winning their event at the PR Winter Festival Invitational on Dec. 22nd. Gieseler better the state qualifying mark for the 3rd meet in a row, Holt and O'Leary just missed the State auto qualifier by narrow margins but achieved the regional auto qualifying standards.

The Girl's 4x400m relay team put on one of the best performances in the last 15 seasons to take second in the event, narrowly missing the state auto qualifier but grab the regional auto qualifier. The team ofSenior Anna Thillairajah, Freshman Heather Holt, Freshman Michelle Dirkse and freshman Ava Bir better the regional standard by over 15 seconds.

Freshmen Ava Bir ran one of the fastest time in school history to take 2nd in the 1000m and booked her ticket to the regional championship.

Senior Jordan Shumate had one of the best throws in the last 15 seasons to put himself into the regional championship.

Freshman Sofia Devin has two top 6 performances in the last 15 seasons. She placed herself #6 on the 55m dash list and tied for #5 on the long jump list (considering that she never jumped before).

To put many of these performances in prospective - In the last 15 season - over 723 boys and 550 girls were members of the track and field programs and many of these performances were ranked in the Top 10. So, we had a pretty good meet to say the least.

For the 2nd Week in a row school records kept coming down and this time it was the girl's turn. The quartet of Senior Anna Thillairajah, Junior Sarah Smith and Freshman twins Ashley Holt and Heather Holt took down the indoor school records in the 4x800m (10:01.39) and Distance Medley Relays (DMR) - 12:56.18. The 4x800m relay team won their event and automatically qualified for the 5A State Championship in February.
